In this episode, I'm talking about a customer who tried to flex their job title and "important position" to get what they wanted — a limited-edition Bearista cup from Starbucks.

We're diving into the weird phenomenon of customers who genuinely believe their résumé should override store policies, inventory limits, and basic reality. From casual name-dropping to thinly veiled threats to full-blown "Do you know who I am?" moments, this episode breaks down why some people think their authority at work magically transfers to coffee shops and the people working there.

It's a story about entitlement, misplaced power dynamics, and the absurd comedy of watching someone completely unravel because a novelty cup doesn't care about their LinkedIn profile.

In this episode:

  • The psychology behind "Do you know who I am?" customers
  • Why job titles don't mean anything in retail and food service
  • How entitlement shows up in the strangest ways
  • The art of staying professional when someone's pulling rank over a coffee cup

If you've ever had a customer try to intimidate you with their credentials, you're going to relate hard to this one.

Perfect for current and former service workers, anyone who's dealt with entitled customers, or people who need a reminder that everyone deserves basic respect — regardless of job title.

00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:03.919
Hi, I'm Yasmin and I'll be your server today.

00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:07.040
I'm a full-time waitress at a casual dining restaurant.

00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:12.160
I'm on foot for 10 hours a day, and I serve hundreds of customers each week.

00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:15.039
And these are my customer service stories.

00:00:15.279 --> 00:00:18.320
Hey everyone, thank you for joining me today.

00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:26.640
I have a really fun episode for you because we're going to be talking about Starbucks.

00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:34.240
And this is, I think, where the most fun customer service horror stories come from.

00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:43.520
If you're a barista, I love you, I feel for you, I'm sending hugs out to you because I'm sure you have a lot of great stories.

00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:49.759
Um, I heard one from my mom that I just had to tell everybody today.

00:00:49.920 --> 00:01:00.799
Um, it is she is actually a manager of operations, um, uh, and she rolls out these Starbucks.

00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:12.560
So she's not a barista, she's not client-facing all the time, but you know, she does train the baristas, and so she does face with the clients from time to time.

00:01:12.799 --> 00:01:19.519
And um, obviously, because you know, she's a manager, she's the one that's gonna get all the fun complaints.

00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:22.640
So she's got a lot of real goodies.

00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:36.959
Um, this one that I'm about to tell you is from the holiday season because there was this really interesting cup that they released, it was called the berista, ha ha ha, pun intended.

00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:46.159
So it's shaped like a bear, it's this glass cup, it's got a little um green beanie on it, um, and it's got a straw.

00:01:46.319 --> 00:02:18.719
And what's cool about the bear is that it's because it's glass, um, if you put like a cold beverage in it, like let's say you do um a cold coffee and you put the coffee in it and the cream, like you can you can see the gradient, so it's got um an interesting sort of aesthetic to it, and it was just for some reason like all the rage, and I don't know why, but apparently, like you know, only a few of them came out, like it's really, really rare.

00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:21.039
Like these, okay, okay, listen to me.

00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:25.680
These bears, when my mom told me, I'm like, this is like utter insanity.

00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:28.400
So these bears went viral, they went viral, guys.

00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:33.360
Like, people were desperately like trying to find them.

00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:42.639
They were um people would buy them who who found them and are reselling them for like$500 on eBay.

00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:43.680
Like it is sick.

00:02:43.759 --> 00:03:00.000
Like, I don't know what is what is going on with the human race where some like little bear-shaped cup is just like all the rage and people are like marking it up, like oh my god, why?

00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:05.360
Why just if somebody wants it that bad, just like sell it to them for regular price.

00:03:05.599 --> 00:03:09.680
Why, why do you have to like like imagine if somebody's kid wants it?

00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:14.879
Like, they're just gonna give you half their savings just to buy this cup.

00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:17.039
I don't, I don't know, I don't know.

00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:18.400
I don't know.

00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:28.159
I feel so bad for the barises because I'm sure that that many of them have horror stories on people trying to find these cups.

00:03:28.240 --> 00:03:51.759
Uh, but anyway, so this this story is about this cup because my mom has her own horror story about it, and so um she got a call from this lady um who wanted to complain because she apparently this customer went to the Starbucks at five in the morning.

00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:56.639
Oh my god, that just that makes me that makes me tired just thinking about it.

00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:02.560
Five in the morning to buy this for her daughter, and they were just like they were sold out.

00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:13.120
But the problem was like as soon as they would bring these things in, like they were just selling it so quickly, like they couldn't, and they they weren't even getting enough stock of it, like it was so so rare.

00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:14.960
And I don't know why Starbucks did that.

00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:19.120
I think that was like just really mean of Starbucks.

00:04:19.199 --> 00:04:33.360
I mean the customers are clearly interested in this product, and they've manufactured so few of them, they've caused there's this huge hype around it, nobody can get their hands on it, and just all the workers are getting shit for it.

00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:37.040
So that's like oh my god, I just I feel so bad for the workers anyway.

00:04:37.199 --> 00:04:43.199
So this lady's yelling at my mom that she got there at 5 a.m.

00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:57.360
and the barista had sold the cup the day before, and it was not meant to be released the day before, but I mean someone came and got it, and the barista didn't know it wasn't their fault.

00:04:57.680 --> 00:05:11.439
And so the interesting point about the story is not that people are going cuckoo for like these little bears, these bear cups, it's that so the lady tries to pull this card on my mom.

00:05:11.519 --> 00:05:15.360
She's like, Oh, but I'm I'm a professor of English.

00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:18.480
I'm like, who cares if you're the a professor?

00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:21.920
No one gives a shit what you do for a living lady.

00:05:22.079 --> 00:05:41.680
Like, so you're just you're gonna give my mom a hard time because Starbucks didn't manufacture enough of these stupid cups, and what, like, you're the smartest person on the face of the planet, but and yet you couldn't get your hands on this bear, so your your your ego is crushed.

00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:43.120
Like, what is the point of this?

00:05:43.360 --> 00:06:18.240
And it reminded me of my um a family member who is has their doctorate in like computing, computer science, computing, like that, that area, and he was calling um, I think it was like future shop to complain about something because they had purchased something, it wasn't the right thing, they were on their way to the airport, and I I don't know exactly what the story was, but he was calling to complain, and he tried to pull that card too, and he was like, This is Dr.

00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:29.920
So-and-so, like trying to establish his superiority over whoever he's talking to on the other end, and then his wife, I love his wife, his wife got really mad at him.

00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:31.279
She's like, What are you doing?

00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:33.439
Nobody cares, nobody cares.

00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.959
And I mean, she's got she's got her doctorate too.

00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:41.279
She's a really smart lady, but she's like way super humble, you know what I mean?

00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:43.439
Like, easy to talk to, very friendly.

00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:54.800
So it was just is hysterical because this woman on the phone is trying to play this card with my mom, and she's just like, I can't do anything.

00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:57.199
Like, there is literally nothing I can do.

00:06:57.360 --> 00:06:58.959
I can't order anything for you.

00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:00.399
That was limited.

00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:10.160
It was while quantities last, you know, the decision is on Starbucks head office, like it has nothing to do with like I just lady, I just work here, you know.

00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:11.759
But obviously, my mom does it.

00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:15.199
My mom's a very, very nice person, a very professional.

00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:21.839
She's like, you know, if it comes in, I'll let you know, blah blah blah, like the whole customer service spiel.

00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:27.439
And I just my my whole thing is I don't know why people do that.

00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:36.079
I don't know why people think that by telling us their professions that is gonna make us what feel less than.

00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:42.560
It's gonna, oh okay, now I have to bow down to you and just whatever you want, I'll give to you.

00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:46.959
It just it's so stupid and it just really just irks my chain.

00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:49.120
I can't, I can't understand it.

00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:54.879
I can't wrap my head around it, it doesn't make you better as a person, it doesn't get you what you want faster.

00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:57.439
If something isn't fair, it's not fair.

00:07:57.519 --> 00:07:58.160
I'm sorry.

00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:02.160
Like, you know, there sometimes there life is unfair.

00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:10.480
Life is unfair, but just because you have a doctorate in English or computer science or whatever doesn't make you get what you want faster.

00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:11.920
It doesn't work, it doesn't work.

00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.519
So if you're a customer listening to this and you've tried to pull that on someone, I'm sorry.

00:08:15.759 --> 00:08:16.720
It does not work.

00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:19.519
So just get over yourself, get over yourself.

00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:29.040
Just because you spend all that money and you're going through and getting all this education, it does not make you better than other people.

00:08:29.199 --> 00:08:35.679
So, I mean, for all my for all my customer service people, my servers, my bartenders, you know what?

00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:37.120
Screw those people.

00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:40.159
Like, nobody is better, you know.

00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:54.159
We are all human beings, we're all equal, we're all, you know, just trying to pay our bills and live a happy life, and you know, and just you know, live, exist, exist in this world with each other.

00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:55.679
So be good to each other.

00:08:55.759 --> 00:08:59.039
Like it doesn't matter what you do for a living, anyway.

00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:06.720
And if you are one of those lucky people that got this Starbucks Barista bear, how in the world?

00:09:06.960 --> 00:09:13.039
Like you must have been the lucky few, the lucky, lucky few.

00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:20.799
I'm just curious if any of you guys listening, anybody, please put it in the comments.

00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:24.559
Tell me, tell me if you found this bear, where you found this bear.

00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:33.759
It's incredible, it's incredible the lengths that people are are going to to buy the barista bear.

00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:47.840
Anyway, that's my special little uh hats off to Starbucks, all my baristas out there, keep doing what you're doing, keep keep feeding people caffeine and coffee, it makes them happy when they're happy.

00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:50.080
You know, we're all happy.

00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:51.919
Um I love you all.

00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:53.600
Thank you so much for listening.

00:09:53.840 --> 00:10:01.440
Um, it would help me so much if you would follow the podcast, leave some reviews, put it in the comments.

00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:04.480
Have you ever had that card pulled on you?

00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:08.559
The the uh this is what I do for a living card.

00:10:08.639 --> 00:10:10.639
I would love to hear those stories as well.

00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:12.960
Um, otherwise, you know what?

00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:14.720
I'll see you guys in the next episode.

00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:17.440
This is your favorite bit or waitress signing off.
