00:00:00.880 --> 00:00:04.320
Hi, I'm Yasmin, and I'll be your server today.
00:00:04.400 --> 00:00:07.519
I'm a full-time waitress at a casual dining restaurant.
00:00:07.679 --> 00:00:12.400
I'm on foot for 10 hours a day and I serve hundreds of customers each week.
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:15.359
And these are my customer service stories.
00:00:15.679 --> 00:00:18.399
Hey everyone, thank you for joining me today.
00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:26.399
Today is a super special episode because we'll be talking about something I like to refer to as flair.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:29.359
And what is flair, you ask?
00:00:29.600 --> 00:00:32.079
Well, I would be happy to tell you that.
00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:44.399
It's basically extra sparkly, shiny, or attention-grabbing pieces that are added to our already soul-crushing and spirit draining uniforms.
00:00:44.640 --> 00:00:46.479
So I'll give you an example.
00:00:46.640 --> 00:01:00.719
Um, during the holiday season, we were asked to wear these holiday-themed headbands and holiday-themed necklaces during dinner service, which is our uh busiest period during the day.
00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:17.359
And that the headbands were like antlers, um, little Santa hats, um, it said Merry Christmas on some of them, and the necklaces were these little bells, so you would jingle jangle as you walk through the dining room, everybody could hear you a mile away.
00:01:17.599 --> 00:01:20.159
And um, you know, I'll tell you something.
00:01:20.319 --> 00:01:21.280
I love the holidays.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:22.879
I'm definitely not a Grinch.
00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:24.719
I get super excited.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:47.920
Um, you know, I I love the spirit of the season, but the problem for me is that I'm more of a conservative person, so I just did not feel comfortable wearing what looked like really childish stuff, like in front of other customers for extended periods of time.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:51.040
Plus, it was very uncomfortable to wear.
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:55.599
Um, it would get in the way anytime I would try and lean over and pick up plates.
00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:03.599
My my antlers would be, you know, hitting light fixtures and hitting things in the kitchen, and it was just sort of a disaster for me.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:07.519
I was like super uncomfortable and embarrassed.
00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:09.439
I didn't I didn't love the experience.
00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:11.680
Let's just put it to you that way.
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:32.240
And I guess the other thing I should mention is that I'm like I'm like the old guy in the group, like I'm um 44 and then all of my coworkers, like the rest of the serving team is half my age, like all of them, all of them are like um 20 and below.
00:02:32.400 --> 00:03:03.680
Like I'm like I'm the old dog, I really am, and sometimes I just you know I just feel like that maturity sort of puts me at a disadvantage, and I'm not saying that being in your 20s makes you immature whatsoever, but you know, it's sort of like I've I've grown out of some of this sort of this stuff like headbands and sparkly and this and that, and it's just it's just not for me, okay?
00:03:03.759 --> 00:03:05.599
And plus it's also my personality.
00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:07.680
I'm super super conservative.
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:13.199
It actually reminds me of um this this video that me and my son watched.
00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:21.120
So he really likes this youtuber sniper wolf, and she in one of our videos was reacting to this this dog.
00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:35.759
The dog was turning like 12 years old, like that dog was old, like it was an old dog, and they threw a party hat on this poor animal, and he just looked so miserable at his birthday party.
00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:38.080
They're throwing him this party.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:49.439
All of the people there were like so happy, and they were singing the dog happy birthday, and the look on that dog's face was just like just take me out right now.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:52.719
Like, just just I can't do this.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:03:54.240
I'm too old for the shit.
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:56.879
Like, that's what it that's what I felt like.
00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:02.960
I in that moment I resonated with that poor little dog 100%.
00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:18.879
So that's what was going on with me when I was just asked to wear all of this stuff, and then um the other thing that made me laugh about Flair is it like it reminded me of this really, really great movie.
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:28.879
And if you are in the serving industry, if you are in like software or IT, you have to watch this movie, okay?
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:41.040
It is a cult classic, it is probably one of my favorite movies um from like the 90s, late 90s, early 2000s, it's called Office Space.
00:04:41.199 --> 00:04:50.319
And I suppose if you're in any industry, you can get like a bit of a kick out of watching it, but it will really hit home if you've been in one of those two industries.
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:53.040
And lucky for me, I've been in both.
00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:57.600
So before I started serving, I was actually in the software industry for many years.
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:08.000
I left because it was just um uh there was no work-life balance, and it was really hard to raise like a young child.
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.639
Um, essentially, that's that's what happened to me.
00:05:10.720 --> 00:05:23.199
I was getting um called to travel, I was um, you know, getting hit up with questions and emails like at all hours of the day, and it was just it's it's just too hard.
00:05:23.279 --> 00:05:27.519
It's just you know, I wanted to raise my kid, and I just felt like I was never there.
00:05:27.680 --> 00:05:31.279
So anyway, with serving, you go, you do your thing, and you come home.
00:05:31.519 --> 00:05:33.040
But I've been in both industries.
00:05:33.199 --> 00:05:34.560
This movie is so great, okay.
00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:37.439
And if you like Jennifer Aniston, she's in it.
00:05:37.519 --> 00:05:52.240
This is I think it's it's pre-friends, like it's young Jennifer Aniston in her prime, she's so good in it, and she plays um a waitress, Joanna, and uh she is the love interest for the main character.
00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:53.759
And the whole movie.
00:05:53.920 --> 00:06:03.920
So I'll give you a little bit of background on the movie because you will really appreciate Flair once I give you a bit of a background on the movie.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:09.360
So um the writer, um, Mike Judge was an engineer in Silicon Valley.
00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:22.879
So this so all of the stuff that happens in the movie is like based on actual painful experiences at work, and I was like, oh my god, this is so balls-on accurate.
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:25.120
It is such a good movie, you have to watch it.
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:35.360
And I don't know if he was like in in the restaurant industry at some point in his career, but that is also quite accurate, so love that.
00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:59.279
Um, and then in the scene specifically, so Jennifer Anison is his waitress, she's been asked to on her uniform wear flair, and it's these like little pins, and she has to wear, I think the minimum is like 10, and they're supposed to um help you express your individuality and well yeah, yeah, all that all that bullshit.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:11.199
Anyway, so um the boss in the scene comes up to Jennifer Anderson and he's like, Hey, like uh I see you're not wearing enough flair, and she's like, What are you talking about?
00:07:11.360 --> 00:07:19.360
Like, this is the minimum amount of flair, and the guy's like, um, well, so and so over there has gone above and beyond.
00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:31.120
And look at all the flair he's wearing, and he's just this like kooky off the wall guy, like joking with the customers, and it's just it's so ridiculous, like the absurdity of it.
00:07:31.279 --> 00:08:33.440
It's just it just makes me like oh my god, cry laughing, like when I watch it, when I watch that scene, and um yeah, and then she's like, like, I don't understand, like basically, like, she's following the rules, she has what she's supposed to have on, and he's like, No, like the boss is like you need to project more enthusiasm, you know, you are not being a team player, and it's sort of like it really reminds me of how in customer service you're index you're made to feel like you have control, but you really don't, like you your own personality is overshadowed by your uniform, and then if you're asked to wear flair, then it's just you're just being this other person, and even your personality, like you have to smile and laugh, and just take take people's negativity and their crap all day long.
00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:40.639
Um, when customers are complaining or upset, and you just have to smile, and it's like inside you're dying.
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:58.480
So I just feel like like that scene is um very true to I think for me personally, a lot of my experiences because I'm like, oh my god, like it's just all of this stuff just overshadows who I am, like, I don't have a voice.
00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:19.279
So if you haven't watched the movie, please, like you must watch it, especially that scene with Jen Aniston, and she has this great monologue at the end where it's like you know, nobody likes their job, like nobody likes you know, being told what to do, but we like make the best out of the situation, you know what I mean?
00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:22.639
So it was like a really refreshing movie to watch.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:30.639
Anyway, I ended up wearing the headband and the jingle jangle, and I don't know, guys.
00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:37.360
Like, like I said, I'm like the old dog, so I was just like grumpy the whole day just wearing this stuff.
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:38.960
Um, but you know what?
00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:47.279
You let me know if you have a story about flair or something that you were uh particularly didn't like to wear.
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:48.799
Um, leave it in the comments.
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.480
I would love to read about it.
00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:55.679
Please don't forget to follow the podcast and share, it would really help me a lot.
00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:02.399
